Training Update

April 17th, 2009 | by fredrik.eriksson |

I had high hopes for this season before it started. Unfortunately, my base training suffered a serious setback with almost all of March lost to sickness and travel. To add insult to injury, I had the worst stomach bug of my life last weekend and lost five pounds in four days.

What to do? A few months from now I’ll have to look back and see if my decision to proceed with two peaks was the right move. I was supposed to start my Build 1 phase the first week of April but decided to go back to a 3-week Base 3, which I will finish next week.

Then follow shortened versions of Build 1 and Build 2, each three weeks long. My original plan was to make each phase four weeks. Then it’s time to peak for Blue Lake.

I don’t think this will be enough to do as well as I had originally hoped for. Then again, if I can stay healthy I might surprise myself. It’s amazing how quickly one can build fitness when things fall into place just right.

Because of my limited base, I’ve decided to skip Anaerobic Endurance workouts prior to Blue Lake, chosing to focus on Muscular Endurance and more Force instead. After Blue Lake, I’ll evaluate where I stand and might throw in some AE before the Portland Triathlon.

Despite a few setbacks, I’m still in better shape than I was last year at this time.
