Blue Lake Sprint Triathlon 2008
June 15th, 2008 | by fredrik.eriksson |I kicked off the 2008 triathlon season with the Blue Lake Sprint on Saturday. I had it marked as a B priority race and was training through the week with no taper. My legs were a bit sluggish going in, but overall I was pleased with my performance. I finished 26th out of 532.
This is the biggest race I’ve done and very well-organized. The setup is first rate and the course is relatively flat and fast.
Below are some pictures. In addition to Xan, my co-worker Lisa and her husband, Jeff, were also there to snap away and cheer on the North Pacific contingent that raced. It’s always nice to have support, so thank you guys.
Swim: It went more or less as expected. The water was considerably warmer than in Vancouver last September, which was nice. No nasty surprises. I just settled for my normal slow pace and kept a straight line. Place: 158th.
T1: Getting out of the water I sprinted into the transition area and got out on the bike quickly.
Bike: I’ve had some concerns about my biking ability because I haven’t been able to put enough time into this discipline this spring. However, this was the highlight of the day. I went hard from the start and got the 16th best time (actually 15th, because I think #1 is an error). Place after bike: 34th.
T2: Another decent transition. Since the transition area was all grass, I decided to keep my cleats on after dismounting and just sprinted to my rack.
Run: This is where my sluggish legs took their toll. I had hoped to break 20 minutes but came in at 20:33 (19th best). The hard training earlier in the week and a strong push on the bike meant I didn’t have enough left to finish as strong as I wanted.
Overall, it was a very encouraging start to the season. With a week of training left for Hagg Lake, and proper taper the week before that race, I might be in a position to grab a top 10 spot.

You look to be in great shape Biffster. I am truly impressed. Good luck at the Hagg Lake run.
In two weeks I will play my second Norwegian campionship game in football. I hope it will end in a win and it will probably be my last game.
I am more likely to take up the “staring contests for a pint beer”, than triathlon after football though!
Cheers,
M

Thank you, Wikas. I think we’ll make a triathlete out of you yet, especially now that you are riding your bike to work! Here’s a link to get you started: http://www.triathlon.no/
